We will produce a documentary on the Windrush generation journey at the Marcus Garvey Centre from the Raleigh Cycle Factory days, its glory days in the 1980s and 1990s, and its subsequent decline and need for renewal. We will create a 90-minute documentary about this story with help from 16 to 24 year old students at PATRA taking multimedia and marketing courses, along with a booklet as a companion piece. In August, we will host a Windrush Celebration event to introduce the film, unveil a plaque in remembrance of the Windrush generation, and begin distributing copies to libraries, art studios, and community centres. To mark Windrush Day 2023, we will organise a commemorative event to put a commemorative plaque on the Marcus Garvey Centre and have a pre-launch event for the documentary and the booklet. With a particular focus on the Howitt Building, the former headquarters of the Raleigh Cycle Company, it will deepen understanding of the Windrush generation and its descendants and increase historical awareness among the public. It will document the journey, including the change of name to Marcus Garvey Centre, the previous and current users, its impact and role, with specific interviews on Caribbean communities that have been using the building over the years. It will document the disappearing stories of the building and the people, create resources (film and booklet), and distribute them widely, including creating digital resources to be filed in the Marcus Garvey Centre for future generations.
