THE MARCUS GARVEY CENTRE

It offers daycare that primarily serves the needs of senior citizens from the African diaspora who are suffering from dementia, physical, sensory, and mental health disabilities, among other problems. For more than 30 years, it has been a service to the neighbourhood, giving solace to people who are frequently alone at home, occasionally without family, and who lack any kind of social connection or activity. In order to meet the social, health, and recreational needs of African and Caribbean elders, it offers provisions that are culturally appropriate. The center's mission is to advance and support the interests of members of BAME communities by providing the necessary facilities, advocating for members' rights through social and recreational sports events, and offering a variety of youth services.

Who we are:

The Marcus Garvey Centre is a well-known and popular landmark in Nottingham. The structure was initially built in 1931 to serve as the Raleigh Bicycle Club’s headquarters, and Historic England formerly listed it as Grade II architecture in August 2018. The structure, which has been known as the Marcus Garvey Centre since 1981 and is run by the West Indian Cavaliers Sports and Social Club, has served as a location for offices, community functions, and social gatherings for African and Caribbean people. It can accommodate 600 people.

What we do:

Located in the heart of Nottingham’s student area, Lenton has an estimated student population of 30,000. The ballroom is in close proximity to the student halls of residence and the university campus. A multipurpose space, the ballroom hosts a diverse selection of live music club nights, performances, and events.

Private Hire

With the open space serving as a blank canvas for any creative mind to fill, our venue can be used for anything you can imagine. The Marcus Garvey Ballroom can be used for a variety of events, including live music performances, fashion shows, corporate gatherings, comedy shows, wedding receptions, meetings, boxing matches, and indoor markets. Our standard drinks licence allows us to provide entertainment with soft drinks until 4 a.m. and serve alcohol until 2 a.m. On request, we can extend this by two hours, enabling us to remain open until six in the morning.

Private Parties/ Corporate Events

The location is also available for private or business events. The basic service includes keeping our bars open and using our sound system, technology decks, mixer, and dual CD systems. We can comfortably seat 600 people at a variety of table sizes, including large round banquet tables that you might want to use at a wedding.

 

Additionally, within the constraints of the budget you give us, we can offer DJs, bands, comedians, or really anything else you can think of. Additionally, we can organise and manage your event, freeing you up to enjoy yourself. Any requests are easily accommodated, and a buffet is an additional choice. Although we specialise in West Indian food, we can also serve sit-down meals with a variety of menu choices.
